Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown

Yesterday afternoon ABC showed a documentary film about horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, called Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown. I really enjoyed it. It was simple and well-organised. As a fan I didn’t learn much that was new. But I really enjoyed hearing from the artists who’ve been influenced by him: Guillermo del Toro, John Carpenter, Ramsey Campbell, Peter Straub, Neil Gaiman, and many others.

It’s worth seeking out if you’ve heard the name “Lovecraft” but don’t really know what he’s all about, or if you’ve read his stories but not gotten into his biographical details before. It’s also worthwhile for horror and sci-fi fans who don’t know how widespread (and unlikely) his influence is.
