A grab-bag of films

Movies I’ve watched recently:

  • Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors. Five strangers meet on a train, and are foretold their grim destinies by the mysterious Tarot-reading Dr. Terror. Five separate vignettes, each lamer than the last. Killer plants! Disembodied hands! Vampires!
  • Sicko. Michael Moore’s documentary about how letting insurance companies effectively run the medical system in the US and treat it as a profit-making business has been a disaster. His portrayal of health systems in Canada, the UK, and France is one-sided, but it’s a side that rarely gets airtime in the US. Consider the pluses and minuses all you want, but I’m glad I don’t live in a country where I have to worry about whether I’ll get any treatment at all.
  • Grave of the Fireflies. Late ’80s anime about the WWII bombing of Japan through a child’s eyes. Very well done, and very sad.
  • The Magician. Early Ingmar Bergman film. Said to be among his most accessible work, but still deeply odd. Amazing use of light and shadow, an abrupt ending; I’m still not sure I get it entirely, but it seems to be a film about the illusory nature of film-making.
  • Team America: World Police. I’ve seen it a few times before. It was on TV. The songs and puppet antics are still fairly funny.
