Red Cliff

We went to see Red Cliff last night, John Woo’s return to Chinese film-making after his Hollywood stint. I thought it was really good, even if it is a 2.5-hour edit of the 4-hour two-part epic that broke box office records in Asia.

And “epic” is the right word. It’s grand in scale and spectacle, with lengthy and detailed battle scenes that have been rightly compared to those in the last two Lord of the Rings films. The dialogue is a little ham-handed in a couple of spots, and there are some plot jumps due to the editing, but overall it’s thrilling. The fact that it’s based on an actual ancient battle that was historically important in China adds some interest.

If you like battle maneuvers, flaming ships, military strategy, and lots of bloody spearwork this is your film.
