I’ve eaten a couple of good supermarket cheeses lately. Both are French, both are harder (but not too hard), and both have earthy, nutty tastes. I ate both as table cheese, with bread and sliced ripe tomatoes.

    Also try Waitrose’s Mountain Cantal AOC (12 month, French, hard)at the deli counter and as a very nice alternative to parmasan, Pecorino Sardo DOC (from Sardinia) which is in the specialty area in the cheese chiller.
