I recorded gritty Hong Kong ganster drama Hak Se Wui (aka Election) a couple of weeks ago and watched it this morning. It’s quite good. It’s a moody tale mixing tradition and backstabbing when a Triad crime organisation needs to elect a new leader. It reminded me a bit of The Godfather in its slow pacing, its struggles for power, and its measured but intense use of violence. It’s not an all-time classic in the same league as that latter film, but it’s good.
